Blast from the past: The Kohli-AB bromance!
Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers have made significant contributions individually and while batting together for RCB. Let’s go back in time to 2013 and relive their first ever 100-run-stand in a drama-filled match against the Delhi Daredevils!
In the 21st match of IPL 6, RCB took on DD at the Chinnaswamy stadium. In this game we found a new partnership that would eventually go on to become the backbone of our line-up. Virat Kohli andAB de Villiers, the two giants of international cricket came together to pile on their first-ever hundred run stand in IPL.
Chasing a tricky 152 for victory, RCB lost the wickets of both Chris Gayle and KL Rahul early. At 26-2, the Indo-Protea pair came together to start the rescue mission for RCB. Kohli and AB started to steal singles, convert those singles into doubles and scored the odd boundary to keep the chase on track.
They both matched each other shot for shot and the spectators started to breathe a sigh of relief! Slowly two of the best batters in the world started to complement each other. It was Virat Kohli’s day as he started to impose his dominance on the Delhi’s spinners. AB, being an explosive batsman himself, took the back seat and decided to give the strike to Kohli recognising the need of the hour. Kohli then pressed on the accelerator in the middle overs and added to the opposition's woes.
Kohli quickly scored his fifty while AB de Villiers played the perfect supporting role to anchor the innings. In the 16th over, AB unluckily got runout for 39 off 32 balls! The wickets started to tumble and in a quest to up the ante, Virat Kohli too got caught on 65 off 50 deliveries. The game wasn’t over though and after a lot of drama, RCB were able to tie the match!
It all boiled down to the super over where AB’s two consecutive sixes helped RCB deliver the winning punch!
From that game on, began the bold and celebrated partnership of two batters, Kohli and de Villiers, who took every format of the game in the years to come by storm!
